Vellum Overlay

Hi there,

January is a big birthday month for people in my life.  It includes my mom’s birthday, my husband’s, my best friend’s and our daughter’s birthday, plus many friends whom I think of this month.  I made this card for my mom who turned 88 this month.  We are so blessed to still enjoy her presence.  On the inside of the card I wrote, 

All of the wonderful stamps I used are from Strawberry Jude Stamps.  The mitten and tiny snowflake stamps are planner stamps called Don’t Forget School: Icons.

Oh So Baroque Pastries

The cake is called Oh So Baroque Pastries.  Isn’t it beautiful?

 

 

 

I stamped the cake on a piece of vellum using VersaMark Sticky Ink.  Hero Arts  White Embossing Powder was melted with a heat tool. 

 

 

I colored the cake on the back of the embossed image with Prismacolor Colored Pencils.

It looks so pretty on the back with the bright colors.  Here’s a close up of the front of the vellum.  I love this cake.  Wish I had a piece of it to eat!     Next I used stamps that Strawberry Jude Stamps just released this month, Don’t Forget Calendar: Monthly.  I’ve wanted and needed week days and month stamps for years, even in my scrapbooking days.  I think these are perfect!

I used a piece of 90# Canson Watercolor Paper, cut to 5.5 x 7.5 inches.  Laying the cake stamp on it in the center, I used a ruler to space the months around it.   

Using the VersaMark Sticky Ink again, I stamped the watercolor paper and heat embossed it with Recollections Sapphire Embossing Powder.

After embossing the months on the front panel, I trimmed it to 5 x 7 inches.

 

 

The background of the front panel was then tinted with Tim Holtz Spun Sugar Distress Ink, using a Mini Ink Blending Tool by Ranger. 

NOTE:  Distress Ink doesn’t blend well on Neenah cardstock, but it blends very well on watercolor paper.    

                  

I used a Faber-Castell PITT Artist Pen in Middle Purple Pink to circle the word January.

Since this was a January birthday card, I wanted to embellish it with snowflakes.  To do so, I used the Cuttlebug Embossing and Die Cut Machine to cut out snowflakes. 

 

The large snowflake die is from Simon Says Stamps, called Ashlynn. The two smaller snowflakes are unidentifiable, since I threw away the packaging years ago.

The snowflakes were adhered to the front of the vellum with clear double-sided tape . 

 

Adhesive under vellum shows through.  The vellum layer had to be adhered UNDER the objects on the vellum, so the glue wouldn’t be seen after the card was assembled.   

This was then adhered to the front panel. 

For the card base I used 110# Neenah Solar White Cardstock, cut to 10 x 7 inches and folded in half to make a 5 x 7 inch card.  The front panel was adhered to the card base with Scrapbook E-Z Runner Permanent Adhesive.

                                                                       

I didn’t like the holes in the center of the larger snowflakes, so I  adhered Doodlebug Design Inc. Lily White Sprinkles, Glitter Asst.  Even though the Sprinkles are self-sticking, I always add a little liquid glue to the back to make sure they don’t come off in the mail.

NOTE:  The vellum I used was inexpensive vellum from Michael’s Craft Store, sold by the sheet.  This vellum warped some when embossing it, even though I heated up my heat tool before I used it to emboss.  My goal is to get some heavier vellum so this will not be a problem and heated properly.  I want to try Bazzill 40 LB VELLUM 8.5 x 11 White.

I love the way the colors on the cake turned out so vibrant.  I used colored pencils because a wet marker would wrinkle the vellum.  The overlay of the vellum gives the card such a soft look.  Most of the cards I design are bright with dark colors, so this is a refreshing change for me.   I encourage you to make some winter birthday cards.  It’s a satisfying way to spend an evening.
